A white woman with blonde hair is lying on her back, cuddling a ventriloquist doll. She’s wearing a white shirt and jeans, and the doll is also blonde, with lined eyes and very red lips. It’s wearing a cream turtleneck jumper and chequered black and white trousers.

A performer. A dummy. One voice between two bodies.

Answer Me, Pythia (Work-in-Progress) continues Stina Fors’ ongoing research into ventriloquism and its lineage – from oracle to witch to comedian – asking what happens to a voice when the belief system around it changes. Not the voice itself, but the meaning imposed on the voice.

The research traces a displaced voice that has been called divine, demonic, comic and pathological depending entirely on who is listening. In this Work-in-Progress sharing, it enters the room. The balance of authority between performer and dummy is never fixed, shifting through the roles their relationship makes possible.

Answer Me Pythia (Work-in-Progress) follows a two-week residency in our building as part of UNREAL.
