A Study Day: The Rise and Fall of Napoleon & Josephine
Napoleon's rise to fame was meteoric and his fall no less so. From being the son of a lawyer living in Ajaccio, Corsica, he became Emperor of France and his military conquests were to change the face of Europe.
The lectures will look at Napoleon's genius both as an administrator and as a commander, assessing his achievements and failures, his strength and his weaknesses. The relationship of Napoleon with the Duke of Wellington will be examined as will the way in which Napoleon is depicted by artists
One of the lectures will look specifically at Josephine de Beauharnais, to whom Napoleon was married, and examine her influence and legacy.
The fall of Napoleon was no less spectacular than his rise with exile first to Elba and then to Saint Helena in the South Atlantic. Finally, the place of both Napoleon and Josephine in history will be assessed.
Doors open at 9:30 am and tickets cost £35.
Places must be booked in advance.
