Blackline Press & Agency Ltd

Operating from Lansdowne House on Northcote Road in the 1990s, Blackline Press & Agency Ltd formed part of London’s queer media and commercial infrastructure at a time when LGBT+ visibility was still hard-won. Based in Battersea rather than the West End, it reflects how queer cultural and economic activity had spread well beyond central London by the 1990s.

Blackline worked across publishing, advertising and promotion, with a particular association with gay guides and directories in the UK and internationally. These publications played a crucial role in connecting people to venues, services and communities in the pre-digital era, and now stand as valuable records of everyday LGBT+ life.

Alongside its publishing work, Blackline operated as a full-service advertising and public relations agency, supporting LGBT+ businesses, events and organisations through design, print and media promotion – much of it unseen by the people who relied on it. Its presence in Wandsworth highlights the borough’s role in sustaining the less visible but essential infrastructures that underpinned queer social life in the late twentieth century.
