Blades

Blades was an Italian restaurant on Lower Richmond Road that appeared in gay listings during the 1990s, forming part of Putney’s small but significant queer social scene at a time when explicitly LGBTQ+ venues in the area were limited. Although not a gay bar, its inclusion in directories suggests it was known as a place where queer customers felt comfortable and welcome.

During the 1990s, many mainstream cafés, restaurants and bars across London began to appear in gay guides, reflecting both growing LGBTQ+ visibility and increasing recognition of queer communities as valued local customers. Some venues actively signalled friendliness, while others simply became known through word of mouth as safe, relaxed places to meet. In neighbourhoods like Putney, this widened the range of spaces where queer social life could take place beyond dedicated nightlife venues.
Places like Blades mattered precisely because they were ordinary and local. They offered familiar settings for conversation, meals and low-key socialising, serving people who lived nearby or preferred not to travel into Soho or Vauxhall. For some, especially older residents or those balancing work and family life, these neighbourhood spaces were easier to access and felt less exposed.
Although Blades no longer exists, its appearance in queer listings highlights the everyday geographies of LGBTQ+ life in Putney — shaped not only by bars and clubs, but by restaurants, cafés and streets where people built social worlds in plain sight, woven into the fabric of local life.
