Star Steam

Star Steam at 38 Lavender Hill operated as a gay sauna and steam bath from the late 20th century. It was listed in 1990s gay directories as offering sauna and steam rooms, relaxation areas, TV lounges and a refreshment bar – a mix of facilities that made it both a sexual and a social space – located in a busy urban area close to Clapham Junction station.

Communal bathing has long been associated with male social and erotic cultures, as far back as ancient Greek and Rome. In London, gay saunas drew on older traditions of communal bathing, providing privacy and connection at times when few other spaces allowed men to meet openly.

Like many such venues, Star Steam occupied a complex place in queer history. During the late 20th century – particularly the AIDS crisis – saunas became sites of heightened scrutiny but also community-led responses around care, responsibility and safer sex.

Although the Star Steam Sauna is no longer in operation, it forms part of a wider cluster of queer social and cultural spaces around Battersea that shaped everyday LGBTQ+ life in this part of the borough.
