Wandsworth Common Care Home

Wandsworth Common Care Home, operated by Avery Healthcare, has become an important local space for supporting older LGBTQ+ people in the borough. Working in partnership with Age UK Wandsworth, the care home hosts a monthly LGBT+ 50+ coffee morning, creating a regular, welcoming space for people to meet, talk and build connections in later life.

For many attendees, these gatherings carry particular weight. Some lived through decades when being openly queer meant risking discrimination at work, in housing or even in healthcare settings. A visible, inclusive social space in later life can therefore feel not just sociable, but deeply affirming — offering reassurance that identity does not have to disappear with age or illness.

Although the care home is not a community-run venue in the same way as local voluntary organisations, its decision to open its doors to people beyond those living on site plays a meaningful role in reducing isolation. By offering time, space and hospitality, Wandsworth Common Care Home contributes to a wider network of care that recognises ageing as part of queer life, not separate from it.

Placing this site on the map highlights how queer history is not only about youth, nightlife or crisis, but also about dignity, companionship and visibility in later years — and about the importance of care settings as part of community life.
