Britain Called & We Answered

A project by Wandsworth-based photographer Steve Reeves, celebrating the stories of local residents who came from the Caribbean in response to the British government’s call for people to help rebuild the country after World War II.

Thousands came, mainly by boat and upon arrival, worked in construction, public transport, manufacturing, and the newly formed NHS. They went on to make a huge contribution to British society both culturally and economically, despite often encountering adversity and hostility from the local population.

Through portraits and written interviews, Britain Called & We Answered celebrates the resilience, achievements, and everyday lives of those who took that two-week voyage across the Atlantic, and settled here in Wandsworth.

Britain Called & We Answered is an ongoing project in partnership with Positive Network Community Project. It has been supported by a Welcome To Wandsworth Project Grant to develop the project into an exhibition, installed at Battersea Reference Library 13 - 31 October 2025, and a book.
