War Memorial, Roehampton
Photograph by A. Janik, War Memorial, Roehampton. 1956.
Gelatin-silver print, black and white photograph capturing the War Memorial in Roehampton. The memorial is the focus of this photography and it is surrounded by greenery.
The War Memorial that stood on this site, on the edge of Putney Heath, was unveiled on the 27th July 1922. This came after a delay, as plans have been agreed as on February 1921 to put up a memorial to the men of Roehampton who laid down their lives in the Great War, ‘in the form of a stone cross to be erected on the Green at the entrance to the village’.
This memorial stood in this site until the second world war, when it was mostly destroyed. It was later restored largely in 1952, only 4 years before this photo was taken.
