Tooting Common with a Cricket Match

Tooting Common with a Cricket Match

Oil painting by John Westell depicting a cricket match in Tooting Common. 1887

The painting portrays a serene landscape scene. In the foreground, three large trees with dense foliage frame the view. Between these trees, two groups of people are visible. In the foreground a man, dressed in blue and red is reclined next to a hat. A dog and two girls, dressed in pink and red, complete this group. A bench with two baskets and a cane can be seen behind the middle tree. Another group, this time a child dressed in blue and a lady carrying a baby in pink are located a bit further back. In the clearing middle ground, a cricket match unfolds, with players dressed in white while another group can be glimpsed in the distance. The brown roof of a house peeks in between the trees in the background. The sky is partly cloudy.
