Wandsworth Council Green Plaque: Yvonne Carr
Date
Wed 25 Feb 2026
Yvonne Carr was a Housing Manager for the Patmore Estate and campaigner. She was instrumental in setting up the Yvonne Carr Community Centre.
Yvonne Carr was born in Jamaica in 1945 and arrived in London aged 16. She trained as a Youth worker, and worked for Brent and Wandsworth Councils. Her final post was a housing manager at the Patmore Estate. In this role, she campaigned vigorously and raised one million pounds in order to fund a community centre for the Patmore. She sadly died suddenly weeks before the centre was opened.
After her death, the centre was named 'The Yvonne Carr Community Centre' in her honour and was opened by Gordon Brown, then Chancellor of the Exchequer.
This plaque is generously funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund as part of Wandsworth's London Borough of Culture programme.
