Francis Augusto

What stands out is how accessible culture is here - from free exhibitions at Pump House Gallery to outdoor cinema events in summer. The area celebrates its brewing heritage whilst embracing contemporary arts. Local independent bookshops, music venues, and community theatre groups mean there's always something happening without needing to venture into central London.

Francis Augusto (b.1993, Angola) is a London-based artist working with documentary photography, oral history, and social research. His collaborative practice explores identity, belonging, and cultural memory for communities navigating displacement and institutional exclusion.

His background as a refugee, sociologist, and youth worker informs his methodology. Working primarily with medium-format film, he creates space for participants to shape their own narratives through extended conversations and oral histories.

Recent commissions include "What Settles in the Light" for the Bodleian Libraries (2025), entering the permanent collection; "Ghost Notes" for FORMAT Festival (2025); and "Songs of Love & Loss" funded by Arts Council England (2023).

Recognition includes Portrait of Britain (2020, 2021) and Analog Sparks Gold Winner (2024). His work combines technical mastery with ethical engagement, using the camera as an invitation to connection rather than a tool of capture.

Our hire policy

Living in SW18 means being embedded in the communities I serve—unpaid carers, refugees, working-class families. The Culturally Mindful Programme shows what's possible when councils invest in artist-led interventions. Wandsworth's creative infrastructure enables meaningful, sustained engagement rather than extractive projects, whilst South London's collaborative spirit supports socially engaged practice.
