Written in the Records: Black Presence in Putney’s Past

In the 17th and 18th centuries, 17 Black residents and their families lived in Putney. Their lives were recorded in parish registers at St Mary’s Church, but over time these stories were largely forgotten.

In collaboration with More Curricular CIC, children from Holy Ghost Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School (Battersea) and St Mary’s School (Putney) brought these histories to life. Over 60 portraits reimagine these individuals with care and creativity, giving them the visibility and recognition history often denied.

From bold Stormzy-inspired portraits of George Cuffee to carefully painted depictions of Mary Russel, the exhibition blends historical research with artistic imagination. It celebrates Black presence, faith and community across two centuries, inviting visitors to reconnect with lives that shaped Putney’s past.
