Paintings from the Wandsworth Heritage Collection

This exhibition brings together a selection of small and medium‑sized paintings from the Wandsworth Heritage Collection.

These works capture the character, memory and everyday life of the borough. Spanning from the late 18th Century till the 2000s, these pieces offer glimpses into local streets, riverside industry, architectural landmarks and the artists who shaped Wandsworth’s evolving identity.

Often created by local artists or those with close ties to Wandsworth, these works reveal moments of quiet observation: a familiar chemist shop rendered in bright colours, a bombsite transformed into allotments captured in energetic and bright brushstrokes, or a lost building preserved long after its demolition. Together, they tell the story of a borough in constant motion.

Because of their scale, these paintings invite the viewer to look closely. They reward attention with detail: the signs of long-gone shops, the small human figures in the monumental landscape, or the softness of trees on a once‑rural lane. Seen collectively, they form a visual archive of Wandsworth that is both personal and communal, blending artistic expression with historical record.

This selection of paintings from the Wandsworth Heritage Collection celebrates the beauty found in everyday places and the artists who helped preserve them.

The exhibition will be available to view from 11 March – 30 September 2026 at Wandsworth Town Library Upper Floor.
