Meet outside the Furzedown Pub for this 2 hour guided walk. Gail will introduce many of the inspirational residents and visitors to Furzedown who have coloured the area’s history. Industrialists such as Charles Seely and Henry Thrale influenced this area and far beyond.
We discuss Dr Samuel Johnson, author of the Dictionary of the English Language, who was a frequent visitor to the Thrale family at Streatham Park. We visit a World War Two war artist whose paintings of the damage during the Blitz has helped us understand its impact. We also call on a female engineer who became President of the Women’s Engineering Society at a time when women were still expected to stay at home.
We will also discover stories of intrigue, like the tale of a frogman and diver, whose mysterious 1950s disappearance remains shrouded in secrecy.
