Child of the Divide - Play Reading
Child of the Divide, Inspired by Bhisham Sahni’s short story ‘Pali’, explores political events through the eyes of children, and is part of Bhuchar Boulevard's Retracing Our Footsteps (ROF) project.
Summer 1947 and 16 million people are on the move between India and the newly-formed Pakistan. Amid the violent political upheaval young Pali’s fingers slip from his father’s hand, and his destiny changes forever.
Taken in by a Muslim family, he is given a new name, a new faith and a new life. But when his real father returns to claim him, Pali must decide who he is: the Hindu boy he was born to be, the Muslim boy he has become, or simply a child of the divide.
Child of the Divide has had an acclaimed journey since the Tamasha/Polka theatre premiere when it was Time Out magazine’s ‘No 1 show for families 2006’. The play has been revived multiple times, most notably in 2017, marking the 70th anniversary of the Partition. Child of the Divide was awarded ‘Best Production’ at the Asian Media Awards 2018.
“A wonderful and mature play that uses the story of one child to explore the tragedy of many thousands.." — The Guardian
The reading features live music by composer Arun Ghosh, and is followed by a panel discussion.
