A Soul Journey: From Bucharest to London
Rather than casting the voice as a soloist accompanied by a quartet, all five musicians become equal partners in the same musical architecture. Zan’s expressive voice weaves through the ensemble’s polyphony, while the strings echo, extend and respond
Luiza Zan is one of Romania’s leading jazz vocalists, celebrated for her expressive depth and remarkable stylistic range. Internationally recognised following her success at the Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, she is a performer, composer and educator whose work moves effortlessly between jazz, folk, classical music and contemporary sound worlds.
Muse Quartet is one of Romania’s best-known string quartets, combining classical refinement with a fresh, contemporary sensibility. Their collaboration with Luiza Zan began in 2020 with a tribute to Nat King Cole as part of Bucharest’s Summer Music Season, and evolved into the current voice-and-string-quartet format in 2024, first presented at the Romanian Athenaeum. Since then, they have appeared together at the Romanian Athenaeum Jazz Season, Jazz Cave International Festival and the UCIMR Awards Gala, bringing together jazz, chamber music and improvisation in a distinctive contemporary sound.
