London Borough of Culture projects supported by The Wimbledon Foundation

Fifteen Wandsworth-based community arts and culture projects have been awarded grants in support of Wandsworth’s London Borough of Culture, in the latest round of the Wimbledon Foundation Community Fund. Ten of the fifteen organisations are receiving funding for the first time.

The community arts projects in Wandsworth that received funding as part of the London Borough of Culture include: 

  • Bounce Theatre CIC - To fund summer holiday and after school multidisciplinary arts workshops for children aged 7-11 with special educational needs and disabilities and/or anxiety, about their experiences of play, culminating in an exhibition and event as part of Wandsworth Borough of Culture.
  • Five A Side Theatre CIC - To fund a ten-week creative arts project for local global majority women to explore self-expression and record their stories to preserve cultural heritage.
  • Kazzum Arts Project - To fund the delivery of fortnightly, two-hour creative arts programme to support 25 young refugees and migrants living in Wandsworth. These sessions are to be delivered in partnership with CARAS at their Beechcroft Road centre.
  • Kunsaka - To fund weekly arts and nature for wellbeing project for older people from Black and minority ethnic communities in Wandsworth.
  • Liberty Choir UK - To fund a creative and supportive rehabilitation programme to be delivered at HMP Wandsworth for 110 inmates.
  • Living Communities CIC - To fund a mural art project at Franciscan Road Family Centre, working with SEND young adults and families. The mural space will be co-designed and produced with participants over several weeks. It is anticipated that 50 local residents will take part in this initiative.
  • Putney Arts Theatre - To fund a creative audio project for young people from Putney and for the wider local community. The project will create audio recordings about local spaces loved by residents, which will form an audio guided walk through the area.
  • Rah Rah Community Theatre Company - To fund 16 interactive performances at supported care facilities to help improve the mental health and wellbeing of elderly and disabled residents within Merton and Wandsworth. An additional interactive legacy resource pack will be developed for partners' use post-delivery.
  • Sound Vision CIO - To fund an interactive radio broadcast initiative for young people living in Wandsworth, aimed at developing technical and practical skills while also promoting inclusivity, mental wellbeing and raising awareness of issues facing young people living locally.
  • Spectacle Media CIC - To fund 12 community filmmaking workshops for local residents, building skills and expanding access to community arts. Participants will produce five short films showcasing community arts events and activities during Borough of Culture. The films will be screened at a local community venue.
  • The Providence House Trust - To fund the creation of a video artwork that will be a lasting testament to the diverse and resilient nature of older residents who have lived in North Battersea as part of Wandsworth Borough of Culture. Young members of Providence House will assist in the filming and editing process.
  • Urban Studio Sessions - To fund a 12-week intergenerational creative writing workshop supporting mainly global majority Wandsworth residents to share stories and develop key skills. The project will conclude with an audio-visual exhibition at Battersea Library.
  • Baseless Fabric Theatre Ltd - To fund 10 weekly after-school sessions for children and young people from Roehampton. Sessions will be opera themed and focus on singing, acting, songwriting, creative thinking and learning about opera culminating in a short performance for family and friends.
  • Begin2sports Group Academy CIC - To fund a 16-week mural development and production, engaging local residents in a creative arts programme to celebrate Wandsworth community. This process will help individuals creativity and problem-solving skills which also build wider community cohesion around Community Centre.
  • Kibo Productions - To fund workshops in acting and playwriting for the local community and two specific groups (one for women and one for people from the LGBTQIA community) focussed on writing/theatre skills at Battersea Theatre.

The Wimbledon Foundation Community Fund also awarded grants to ten further projects supporting people living in Wandsworth, helping to meet the social needs and reduce inequalities in the area. Since its launch, the fund has awarded £2.2 million through 345 grants to wide-ranging projects, helping more than 50,000 local people in Wandsworth and Merton.

Other Wandsworth-based projects that received funding include cultural cooking courses at Chantelle’s Community Kitchen, ESOL training sessions for asylum seekers through EFA London, a residents’ woodwork programme through Falcon Estate Residents Association, wellbeing and arts sessions for LGBTQ+ people through Health Equality and Rights Organisation (HERO), and drop-in wellbeing and social sessions for elderly refugees through Humanity Concern Projects.

Further projects include a support programme for leukaemia and blood cancer sufferers through Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust, two projects focused on young people’s mentoring through Our Pain 2 Power CIC and FAST London, and parent engagement events as well as a Summer Reading Club through Learn to Love to Read. Funding has also been awarded to Youth Battersea for operational costs to enable the strengthening of partnerships between Wandsworth youth organisations, the council, funders and companies, to pool resources and provide more opportunities for disadvantaged young people.
