Wandsworth celebrates its year as London Borough of Culture

Published Tue 13 Oct

Wandsworth looks back on the impact of our year as the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture.

On 1 October, we launched an Impact Report at a special event at Battersea Arts Centre celebrating the year and reflecting on the hundreds of events and held and thousands of people that took part.

Highlights of the year included Strictly Wandsworth hosted by Oti Mabuse, featuring hundreds of local dancers and a mass dance finale that everyone could take part in. The year ended with a day hosted by Battersea Power Station headlined by Basement Jaxx.

In between there were more than 1,200 events, activities and projects. More than half a million people attended a live event during the year and almost 50,000 children and young people had the chance to take part.

Many events focused on improving health and wellbeing, including the successful Culturally Mindful project, as well as bringing communities together, championing creative talent and making culture more accessible.

Council Leader Cllr Robert Morritt said:

The year has been a real showcase for our community and has delivered brilliant events with local people at their heart. Wandsworth has a rich heritage and a bright future thanks to all those who have and will live here. I want to thank everyone who took part."
