Part of the Alton Renewal Plan programme at Roehampton’s Alton Estate, the local community have helped create a new artwork by Wandsworth-based artist and creative director Adalberto Lonardi in collaboration with Emergency Exit Arts, who are curating a range of murals on the estate of which this is the first.

A new public artwork, The Four Seasons, is transforming Roehampton Library at the Alton Estate into a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and place. Created by visual artist and creative director Adalberto Lonardi, the large-scale mural reflects the estate’s modernist ideals of openness and togetherness while honouring the diverse communities that call it home.

The mural will be officially unveiled on Saturday 13 September 2025 at 12.30 pm, as part of Wandsworth’s Borough of Culture programme Urban Flow.

Stretching across the library’s tunnel, The Four Seasons traces the passage of a year in Alton through figurative and abstract forms. Developed from extensive research and community workshops, the mural reflects the estate’s strong social fabric and deep-rooted sense of belonging. 20 children and young adults, and more than 50 people among women’s and men’s collectives, BAME groups, and Somali, Muslim, Polish, and South American residents helped design and paint the mural. Local memories—anchored to landmarks such as the church, tower blocks, rooks, and the library itself—shaped the narrative. Adalberto reimagined Alton Estate’s original eight-colour signage scheme, expanding it into a vivid new palette of rich tones, layered with his signature style.

Part of a wider series of new public artworks, the mural will become a focal point for the Alton Estate’s regeneration, offering residents and visitors a space to reflect, connect, and take pride in their community.

The Four Seasons is about celebrating the life, rhythms, and diversity of Roehampton,” said Adalberto Lonardi. “It’s a portrait of the estate told through its people, its seasons, and its landscapes, a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us and the connections that bind us together.
