Corner of Tilehurst and Magdalen Roads

Corner of Tilehurst and Magdalen Roads

Pencil drawing by Stephen Chaplin depicting (1) a study for the painting "Aux Ambassadeurs: Gens Chic" and (2) the junction of Tilehurst and Magdalen Roads in Earlsfield. Dated 3 July 1996.

This object comprises two pencil drawings by Stephen Chaplin 1996.

The drawing to the right shows the junction of Tilehurst and Magdalen Roads in Earlsfield, from the other side of Magdalen Road looking east. In the foreground there is a traffic island marked by bollards with early 20th century houses behind and a street light on a lamppost to the right.

Magdalen Road was formed in stages between 1868 and 1884 and is named after Magdalen College, Oxford, which owned the land. Tilehurst Road was developed as part of the Magdalen Estate in the early 20th century, specifically between 1912 and 1935, during a period of heavy residential expansion in Wandsworth.

The drawing on the left is not connected with Wandsworth. It shows the head and torso of a woman in fashionable 19th century dress with her back to the artist. This is a detail of study for an 1893 oil painting "Fashionable People at Les Ambassadeurs" ("Aux Ambassadeurs: Gens Chic"), by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, showing patrons at a club in Paris. The painting is on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, but the study upon which this sketch is based is held by the British Museum and was exhibited in 1996.
