Painting shows the toll house at the Putney end of the old Putney Bridge. In front of the tollhouse is a brick wall dividing the approach to the bridge from the river. In front of the wall there is a rowing boat. The end of the bridge appears on the left edge of the picture and part of St Mary's Church appears to the right.
Artist Biography
George Frederick Hughes Active 1873–1885 George Frederick Hughes was a British painter whose work reflects the quiet charm of Victorian domestic life and the English landscape. Working primarily in oil and watercolour, Hughes had a particular interest in the riverside scenes of Putney, capturing the atmosphere and everyday rhythms of the Thames during the late 19th century. Though little is known about his personal life, his paintings offer a warm and detailed glimpse into the period’s visual culture.
