"Wandsworth from the opposite bank": "Albert Bridge to Albion Wharf" and "Battersea Bridge to Bridge Wharf"

Two pencil drawings by Stephen Chaplin in a series "Wandsworth from the opposite bank": "Albert Bridge to Albion Wharf" and "Battersea Bridge to Bridge Wharf". Both dated 11 October 2000.

Two pencil drawings by Stephen Chaplin in a series "Wandsworth from the opposite bank". They show the south bank at Battersea in two parts: one covering the area from Albert Bridge to Albion Wharf and the other from Battersea Bridge to Bridge Wharf.

Both were drawn on the same windy afternoon on 11 October 2000 from the same location in Chelsea. This is described in the artist's notes as a "raised seat by Church Street on Cheyne Walk" near Crosby Hall and Chelsea Old Church, also known as All Saints. Both drawings shows Battersea at a time of great change from industrial landscape to high end residential developments.

The drawing on the left includes the right hand chimneys of Battersea Power Station, which at that time was derelict, having been decommissioned in 1983. The power station remained empty until 2014 when work began on a redevelopment. This is followed by the trees of Battersea Park and then Albert Bridge, which the artist notes was designed and built by Rowland Mason Ordish between 1873 and 1875. At the time of the drawing it was being repaired and was under scaffolding. There is then Albion Wharf, which was then being redeveloped as the Albion Riverside residential site, which opened in 2003, and Waterside Point which is now another residential development.

The drawing on the right shows Battersea Bridge which the artist records was designed by Joseph Bazalgette in 1886. This is followed by the Montevetro Building, a glass triangular 20-storey high-end residential development which was then in the final stages of construction. It was built on the site of the former Rank Hovis McDougall flour mills, which had been demolished in 1997.
