In the summer of 1951, the Festival of Britain invited millions of visitors across the United Kingdom to celebrate British creativity, innovation and post‑war renewal. Funded by the government with a budget of £12 million, the Festival showcased national achievements in science, industry, design and culture.

The centrepiece stood on London’s South Bank, with additional sites in Poplar (Architecture – Lansbury Estate), Battersea (Festival Pleasure Gardens), South Kensington (Science) and Glasgow (Industrial Power). Events, performances and touring exhibitions also reached cities and towns across the country.

Created especially for the Festival, the Pleasure Gardens at Battersea Park, offered a lively mix of entertainment and relaxation. More than 8 million people visited during the five months they were open. Visitors enjoyed an amusement park that was later known as the Battersea Fun Fair, and that included the famed Big Dipper and operated into the mid‑1970s.

Other attractions onsite included a miniature railway designed by Rowland Emett, a riverside “West End” Restaurant, the Foaming Fountains, a wine garden, and a wet-weather pavilion decorated with murals by film set designer Ferdinand Bellan. An amphitheatre seating 1,250 people hosted music hall shows, including an opening performance led by Lupino Lane, and later became a circus venue.

Most of the buildings and pavilions within the Pleasure Gardens were designed by the artist and architect John Piper.
