Tooting Broadway Station Street Scene
Photograph by A. Janik, Tooting Broadway Station Street Scene. 1956.
Gelatin-silver print, black and white photograph capturing Tooting High Street outside Tooting Station in 1956. On the left side, the imposing façade of the Methodist Central Hall dominates the scene, its name clearly visible on the side façade.
Pedestrians walk along both pavements, some in pairs, others alone,. A few cars, boxy and chrome-trimmed, travel down the road, while a couple of cyclists pedal away from the foreground.
Above the street, a network of overhead wires stretches across the frame—evidence of the trolleybus or tram system that once served the area.
The buildings lining the street are a mix of commercial and residential, with shopfronts at ground level and flats or offices above.
