This watercolour depicts a view of Parkstead House, formerly known as Manresa House and Bessborough House. This house is built in neoclassical style and has a central courtyard along which the buildings are distributed. The central part of the house is directly in front of the viewer, with a prominent stone central entrance and three levels, each with different size of windows. On both sides smaller buildings frame the courtyard.
The title of the watercolour "Entrance front of the Earl of Bessborough's villa / at Roehampton" appears below the framing of the scene. The artist signature is visible on the right bottom corner "E. Hassell" as is the date !18262.
Artist Biography
Edward Hassell (1811–1852) Edward Hassell was a British watercolourist, son of topographical artist John Hassell. He was particularly drawn to church interiors and modern architecture, capturing them with precision and sensitivity. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists from 1841, serving as its secretary. His contributions were well recognised during his lifetime. Hassell died in 1852.
