The Wandle
Watercolour by J.E. Nicholls, depicting The Wandle. Undated.
This watercolour depicts a river scene with a village nested along its bank. The river is the central element of the composition, with its calm surface reflecting the sky, trees and surrounding buildings. The water appears still, with subtle ripples suggesting a gentle current.A number of buildings lines the right side of the riverbank, with a variety of rooflines and colours. some of them have distinct chimneys. In both sides of the river, but predominantly on the left side lush greens trees flank the river, with shades of grey and brown. The scene is devoid of human and animal life, except for the representation of the back of an animal, probably a horse, in a little embarkment in the centre of the composition.
