Artist Biography
Rachel Marion Tancock de Montmorency (1891–1961) was a British stained glass artist trained by Christopher Whall. After serving as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.) nurse during the First World War, she worked for British stained glass artist Edward Woore, eventually managing his studio in Hammersmith, and later in Putney, while establishing her own reputation as a stained glass designer. In 1931 she married the artist Miles de Montmorency (1893–1963), who frequently assisted with her work. Among her most notable commissions was a memorial window for Tonbridge School Chapel, completed in 1939. Despite severe arthritis in later life, she continued working until shortly before her death in 1961.
