This watercolour depicts a view of a large building, that appears to be built in a Gothic Revival Style. Two prominent turrets flak the central section, with battlements resembling a medieval castle. A large wraparound veranda with arched openings and decorative columns externs across the front and side of the house. The house is surrounded by a lawn with shrubs, trees and flower beds. A path leads up to the entrance on the side of the scene.
There is a inscription at the bottom of the painting reading "Principal Front of the Seat of Rice Esq. Roehampton". The signature of the artist "E. Hassell" is visible in the right bottom corner.
Artist Biography
Edward Hassell (1811–1852) Edward Hassell was a British watercolourist, son of topographical artist John Hassell. He was particularly drawn to church interiors and modern architecture, capturing them with precision and sensitivity. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists from 1841, serving as its secretary. His contributions were well recognised during his lifetime. Hassell died in 1852.
