This watercolour depicts a detailed architectural drawing of a building located in Wandsworth according to the inscription. The building is a three-storey house with a façade that features a prominent central entrance with a decorative pediment above. The building has multiple windows with the ones of the bottom level having external shutters. The building is painted in a soft pink hue, with white shutters and pediment. The gable roof is decorated with two parapets. one ending on a triangle and the other on a semicircle. This disposition is reversed on the pediments located one floor below..

To the right of the building we can see a fence, and to the left of the building another three-story building is attached to it.

There are inscriptions on both the top and bottom area of the watercolour. The top inscription is "Wandsworth" , while the bottom area reads "Old house in Wandsworth, near the church" and "E. Hassell 1827".

Artist Biography

Edward Hassell (1811–1852) Edward Hassell was a British watercolourist, son of topographical artist John Hassell. He was particularly drawn to church interiors and modern architecture, capturing them with precision and sensitivity. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists from 1841, serving as its secretary. His contributions were well recognised during his lifetime. Hassell died in 1852.
