Armistice Day, Balham, London

Armistice Day, Balham, London

Oil painting by Hanna Weil depicting Armistice Day in Balham, London. 1960.

The painting depicts a winter scene with a large, ornate building that appears to be a church. The architecture features a prominent clock tower and spire, along with arched doorways and windows. A flag adorns the roofline, and the ground is covered in snow. In the foreground, 3 figures, one woman and two children face and look directly at the viewer, and in the background several groups of figures are located in different parts of the building. The sky has a muted yellow hue, suggesting either dawn or dusk, with a bright yellow sun on the right side.

Artist Biography

Hanna Weil (1921–2011) A German-born British painter and educator, Hanna Weil studied at Saint Martin’s School of Art (1940–1943) and later taught there for over four decades. Having fled Nazi Germany with her family in 1932, she settled in Hampstead, London, where she lived for much of her life. Weil’s work often explores surreal urban and rural landscapes, marked by bold colours and unusual perspectives. Her paintings reflect a deep engagement with place and memory, including scenes from Transylvania and South London. She also contributed poster designs to London Transport in the 1960s, some of which are held in major museum collections
