A Coat of Strengths (the unveiling of in Winstanley Estate)

Date
Sat 14 Jun 2025

A Coat of Strengths is a 3 dimensional sculpture created for the Winstanley Estate's resident's as their own lasting Coat of Arms

Residents who attended a workshop were encouraged by the Artist, Louise Higgs, to draw just one of their strengths. The group's collective strengths were then lasercut into the Shield, to make overt their usually hidden strengths. The Coat of Strengths echos historical links to the local area when landowner Sir Oliver St John owned this land when he settled there in 1765. Three Falcons were depicted within his own Coat of Arms. The artist M.C. Escher's local drawing of a Falcon (with triangles within its wings) has been remembered in the Coat of Strengths as a trace, some triangles also being seen. It aims to give Winstanley residents a collective identity and a voice. It will also provide a lasting legacy for future generations to come.
