Britain Called & We Answered
Britain Called and We Answered is a free exhibition featuring portraits and interviews with local Caribbean elders.
This project shares the stories of those who came from the Caribbean to England in response to the British government’s call for people to help rebuild the country after World War II.
Thousands came, mainly by boat and upon arrival, worked in construction, public transport, manufacturing, and the newly formed NHS.
They went on to make a huge contribution to British society both culturally and economically, despite often encountering adversity and hostility from the local population.
Through portraits and written interviews, Britain Called & We Answered celebrates the resilience, achievements, and everyday lives of those who took that two-week voyage across the Atlantic.
Britain Called and We Answered is an ongoing project in partnership with Positive Network Community Project.
