Washing Machine Vortex

A ‘Greek-style’ tragedy that explores sexuality, ageing and dementia. Featuring autobiography, tap-dance, a rocking ’60’s sound track, and B&W film.
Washing Machine Vortex is a ‘Greek-style’ tragedy about rediscovering the
power of feminism in my 50’s. I tell the story of finding new expression
post menopause whilst doing the washing for my elderly father. As the
washing goes round I go on a journey through the past. I discover the
patriarchal routes of psychoanalysis and free myself from them by evoking
the spirit of change through the Greek tragedy character of Electra.
Washing Machine Vortex explores the intersections between sexuality,
ageing and dementia. It creates space to think about time, memory and
families. The performance uses autobiography, photographic visuals and a
rocking ’60’s soundtrack. Performed by Sarah Archdeacon and Hannah Lane
Black and White film by Jon C Archdeacon Dramaturgy by Tom Marshman
Audience comment from work-in-progress at the Vagina Museum, Minge Fringe
2024 'I loved the colours and dreamlike, playful mood of the performance'.
'By turns, so funny but also so intimate, moving and bold'. 'The mix of
humour, dispassionate narrative and slightly surreal dives into
psychoanalysis were brilliant'. www.sarahmkarchdeacon
