'Africa in Tooting' History Walk & Plaque Unveiling
Revealing some of Tooting's remarkable black history, this Walk climaxes with the unveiling of a plaque to Constance Cummings-John! What an occasion its going to be as the Tooting community comes together for its annual festival of togetherness, the beautiful Broadwater Road Community Fun Day. And in a unique and very special addition, this year's event sees the unveiling of a blue plaque to a remarkable African woman who lived in this street for three decades at the end of her life. Her story was largely unknown in this country until a BBC Radio Four 'Great Lives' programme a few years ago. Today we celebrate the achievement of educator, activist and pioneer of women's rights in Africa, Constance Agatha Cummings-John, by placing a plaque on her home. Her story is one aspect of some extraordinary black history here on 'Planet Tooting' and before the unveiling we would like to showcase it through an informative and entertaining guided walk.
