Working primarily in oil and watercolour, Hughes had a particular interest in the riverside scenes of Putney, capturing the atmosphere and everyday rhythms of the Thames during the late 19th century. Though little is known about his personal life, his paintings offer a warm and detailed glimpse into the period’s visual culture.
