No Booking Required

A text installation devised by D J Roberts on the billboard at the bottom of Shelgate Road. The three lines displayed on the billboard were found on a slip of paper in the pocket of the poet Edward Thomas after he had been killed at the battle of Arras on Easter Day 1917.

Thomas, who grew up in Shelgate Road, is now regarded as one of the most influential poets of the 20th century.

He will be celebrated in various ways during Wandsworth’s year as London Borough of Culture. Waterstones bookshop in Clapham Junction will be stocking and displaying Thomas’ works while the text piece is up, and on March 22nd 2026 Lucy Milner, Thomas’ great granddaughter, will be leading a walk around Wandsworth, visiting places connected to Thomas.

All forthcoming events related to Thomas will be posted on this website, and information about him can also be found at the Edward Thomas Fellowship (www.edward-thomas-fellowship.org.uk). The billboard will be on view between 12 - 30 November.
