This exhibition unveils the overlooked stories of Black residents in Putney from the 1620s to the 1750s. Drawing on parish records, this exhibition reveals diverse community integrated into Putney's social, religious and family life centuries before commonly recognised.

Through the creative reinterpretation of these historical figures by local primary school students using the form of Stuart-era portraits, the exhibition honours individuals who lived full lives of resilience, faith, work and family love. Each portrait tells a deeply personal story through symbolic and historically accurate elements - such as clothing, objects and backgrounds - that highlight their dignity and presence beyond the limitations of archival descriptions.
