I like the fact Wandsworth is so heritage rich and retains such individual character of areas yet knits together. The fact Borough of Culture falls on the 60th anniversary of the borough we know today being formed shows it is ready to mature into that unique balance. I really enjoy local culture: the stuff that makes residents connect with their home and each other. Untold stories, spaces you can contextualise, linking eras, areas and creating threads that ground people. Wandsworth is rich here!

Nikky grew up in Belfast and planned to move to London for a year. She went South and 25 years later it is home. She swapped her make-up kit for South London's buildings, people and places. A writer, she has written cookbooks around the food of Brixton and Catford and was a co-founder of the Brixton Blog and Bugle. She is a former Chair of Brixton Advice Centre. She trained as an accredited Lambeth Tour Guide Course in 2023/2024. She runs the popular Instagram account @southlondontoday. A former resident of Tooting, she has been working with Studio Voltaire and Open House Festival and custom walks in Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth. She is currently working in Clapham Junction on how walks, social housing and community spaces are key to day to day culture. She's particularly interested in its unique make up and the Falcon Road project. Before tour guiding, she was a community engagement consultant. She is able to connect with people and research to build creativity.

Our hire policy

For me it is the understanding people are the creativity and culture at heart of the borough. The council itself recognises this and gives tools for others to shape it. Having worked on Borough of Culture in Lewisham, I feel a similiar if stronger local pride and communal desire to make culture for all by expanding its definition. The mix of green space, industrial heritage and council estates with ancient areas living modern lives is a fantastic place to live, work and of course eat!
