Geoff Simmons

On an educational Walk, Geoff tells Wandsworth schoolchildren about Sadie Crawford's plaque

There is always something exciting happening, you never know what's next. People just need to know about it and I like to tell everybody on my Walks and Tours what's happening now and how they can get involved or more connected. It's all there for them with so many inspirational organisations and individuals doing wonderful things. The more I found out about my area, whether it's happening today or in the past, the more I grew to love it and I just want to share that feeling with other people.

A Wandsworth resident for 30 years, Geoff Simmons runs a community history project called Summerstown182 alongside his job as a graphic designer. This involves Guided Walks and Talks, working with schools and creating joyous and memorable events through putting up plaques. These include Tooting's 'Reggae Superstars', 'The Daffodil King' and Sadie Crawford 'Lost Woman of British Jazz'. He organised a local schools competition to contribute wording to a plaque celebrating migration. This was placed on Tooting Market and an ongoing 'Planet Tooting' initiative continues to champion the diversity of this area. A plaque for 'The People of Wardley Street' acknowledges Wandsworth's enduring Romany Gypsy heritage. His First World War centenary research project featured story-telling walks round the area stopping outside the houses of people whose names were on a local war memorial. He's the recipient of a Wandsworth Council Civic Award and one of Sadiq Khan's Community Heroes!

Our hire policy

There are so many good people doing extraordinary things, connecting with everyone, supporting each other through difficult times. We need creativity and culture more than ever to help people through and this Borough of Culture year is such a great opportunity to bring everyone together and provide opportunities for people to do things they didn't believe were possible. To see music, dance, art, theatre, heritage all come together at this time and be a little part of it is very exhilarating!
